Bucket hats

I wear a bucket hat now. I don't really care anymore. I'm almost fifty, and two of my brothers have died of melanoma. Well, not died, exactly, but had to have some basal cells removed. And one of them got scrotum eye. So its like he has died twice. A baseball cap isn't going to cut it anymore. It's bucket hat for me.

I've been wearing baggy pants since the nineties. This is not a choice, really, I went to high-school in the early nineties. There is nothing I can do about it.

I have complained, on this blog even, about the styles of clothes that the students wear. Skinny jeans that stop mid shin. Puffy jackets.

At a certain age you are allowed to complain about the styles of the youth. You are expected to. The kids just ignore it as the mutterings of the addled.

Or so I thought. But it appears they have been listening. Maybe they read my blog.

A couple of months back, I noticed that the kids had started wearing baggy cargo pants. Excited about it, I told my wife that I had re-ignited the trend.

"Everyone is wearing baggy pants!" I tell her.

"Who is, I haven't seen it?"

"Of course you haven't, you don't wear glasses."

"I haven't seen it either," adds Lucy.

"And you don't pay attention to anything," I continue at my wife.

"When's dinner?" ask Lisa.

"And you are jealous!"

Alright, I've gone a bit off track here, but the students are wearing baggy pants now, and what can I do if my wife refuses to admit it. Fundamentally different from my wife, I love to admit things. Again, I am from Canada, so there is nothing I can do about it. Even though the students are definitely wearing baggy pants, they are cotton, not canvas, and it is maybe more likely that I have not re-ignited a trend, but rather that trends cycle pretty quickly now, at it was just time that it came around.

Whatever it is, for the first time in 20 years, I don't look dreadfully out of style. Until, of course, my brothers go and ruin it for me with their cancer, and I have to start wearing a bucket hat.

But wouldn't you know it, a week after I start wearing a bucket hat, I walk into my building in the morning, and there is a student wearing a bucket hat. Bucket hat and baggy pants.

"Nice hat!" I say to him. I've made his day.

On campus this week, I have seen seven or eight bucket hats. I'm definitely setting the trends. When I figure out how to capitalize on my new found influencer status, let's see if I share any of the profits with my wife.
