Emotional Maturity

Lucy is sitting in the living room looking at her phone. I control the parental controls for the wifi though, so as a joke I stop her connection.

A couple minutes pass and she yells out, "Hey Dad, the internet is broken!"

"Ha, Ha!" I yell back, a real gotcha yell, "Mine still works. I turned yours off."

"Well can you please turn it back on?"

"No!"  I spin around the kitchen laughing, "Ha, ha, ha. No YouTube for Lucy. Ha har."

"Why did you turn it off?"

"Cause its funny! Ha ha!"

Lucy takes my phone from me.  "I'll just use yours then."

"Hey, what are you doing?" I say.

"It's funny."

"That is decidedly NOT funny Lucy." I unplug the router. "Give it back, or no internet for anybody."

"Why do you get to decide what's funny?"

I think about this for a second.  It seemed obvious that I should decide, I am the father,  but I know that that won't do for an answer.

"Because I'm in touch with my emotions. When you are in touch with your emotions you know what is funny.  Go to room until you figure out what's funny."

Lucy throws my phone on the floor, and goes off to her room slamming the door.

My wife, who has watched the whole thing, says, "Great joke Mark, your best yet. Really funny."

I can't tell if she is sincere or not, but to be safe, I say under my breath, "You don't know what's funny!"
