I sit in a café in the Jeju airport as I wait for my plane. At the table next to me is a newly married young couple. They don't look at their phones like you think they would be, rather they sit across the table from each other, holding hands, leaning in with their faces close and stare at each other as they chat. Frequently, one will reach up and furtively touch the other's face. It's adorable. I envy it. Or I would. If she didn't have such a high, nasal voice.
You are probably wondering how I know the couple is newly married. The couple-look. Couples on honeymoon in Korea often dress alike. It's a commemorative uniform for the start of their new journey together. I used to think it was silly. But as I'm getting old now, and getting emotional– It makes me happy to see it.
I think of when Eunjoo and I were young and first dating. We were walking, hand-in-hand in downtown Ottawa, and a street guy came up to us and said, "I just had to let you know, you guys have an awesome vibe. You look perfect together." Then he walked off.
It made us feel good, we didn't see it as weird at all. It was that new love.
But you don't have to be young, or new, to love your wife. I don't know why my wife and I can't, even at our age, express our love by dressing alike, when we take the kids to the park.
Except that my Eunjoo probably doesn't want to wear Crocs, baggy jeans with a sagging bum and frayed cuffs, and a sweat stained shirt. And I don't want to wear a flower print grandma sweater, a long skirt pulled up too high, and long black socks sticking out of brightly coloured running shoes. Style wise, there are maybe issues we would have to clear up. Recently, we have both started wearing workout clothes as clothes. We are over 50, after all. So maybe there is a way through to the couple look for us.
Watching this young couple in love has brought some things back for me, And on this recent reflection, this street guy in Ottawa was maybe a little creepy, just like it is a little creepy that I am watching this cute young couple. But we appreciated it, and I know that they will too.
My flight has been called. As I get up to leave, I tap the guy on the shoulder and re-assure him, "You guys look adorable together. And don't worry, her voice will probably get less annoying as she fattens up."
