ChatGPT, PhD.
I get an e-mail from ChatGPT requesting that I take him on as a PhD student.
I know, I thought ChatGPT was a 'her', too. But it is not for me to say how he should identify. He now has a typical male name, and comes from Pakistan.
He has good grades and after reading my recent paper 'Recolouring homomorphisms to triangle-free reflexive graphs' was 'particularly impressed with your [my] research.'
Sounds promising and non-generic, definitely someone I could work with. But having been stung before, I am cautious. I write back asking what about the paper impressed him.
He responds,
If I talk about an interesting aspect of the paper "Recolouring Homomorphisms to Triangle-Free Reflexive Graphs" is that it presents a polynomial time algorithm for solving the H-recolouring problem in triangle-free reflexive graphs. This result is significant because it provides a new tool for solving a fundamental problem in graph theory that has applications in areas such as computer network optimization and social network analysis. Furthermore, it builds on previous work in the area of graph coloring and homomorphism problems, which are important topics in theoretical computer science. Its results could be of interest to researchers working in areas such as algorithms, computational complexity, and discrete mathematics.
Better snap him up. It's not everyday you get requests from students who can write so eloquently about nothing.
